EPRI, the research arm for the nation’s electric utilities, has tasked Signatech Systems to assist member utilities in planning fleet-wide asset intelligence, These methods  utilize  sensor technologies and advanced algorithmic techniques  to improve enterprise-wide safety and  performance, monitor equipment health and develop  better situational awareness of operations. Successful implementation of these capabilities is expected to result in cleaner, and safer operation of electric power plants and more judicious use of industrial assets, as well as a cleaner environment.

Signatech Systems has been engaged with the United nation's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Nuclear Power and Grid Stability in a carbon-constrained world in 2009. Over three meetings in 2009 in the Summer and Fall,  Signatech Systems is assisting IAEA in developing requirements for Nuclear Power and Grid Stability to meet burgeoning demands by Less Developed Countries (LDCs) to assess the feasibility of nuclear power and the needs to assure safety and grid stability. Signatech Systems provided the U.S. perspective of nuclear power in the face of climate change challenges as well as assisting in the updating of existing IAEA document. The updated document is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

The company has been awarded a project to develop Advanced Visualization for Smart Grid capabilities under the US Department of Energy Small Business Innovations Research (SBIR)  Program. Signatech Systems has teamed with the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) Visualization Center-- a world renowned facility. The team will  develop and demonstrate practical visualization technologies to enable power distribution managers to make reliable decisions on load management and impending overloads.

The company is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to provide expert advise and technical support on fleet-wide asset intelligence to improve reliability and performance of operating power plants in Asia. The goal of the effort is to develop requirements to quantify and benchmark improvements in equipment and thermal performance and to assess climate impact. The requirements are currently being evaluated for implementation across the generating fleet.

Signatech Systems has partnered with Cornet Technology to offer a low-cost and reliable video surveillance system (The WatchmanR) that provides plug and play capabilities; wireless interfaces with IP cameras, and capability to provide instant e-mail alert and supporting evidence. The price points meet utility specifications for a relaible surveillance system. The Watchman is being evaluated by three major Fortune 500 utility companies.

The company is assisting the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the development of strategic vision and curriculum to meet future electric power industry needs for the Carolinas. The company principal was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences for a three year term starting August 2008.

The company is supporting a major U.S.-based electric utility in expanding asset intelligence to include all aspects of power generation and distribution optimization. This capability will provide the utility  means to reduce cost of operation across its portfolio of power plants.
