Climate Change and Electric Power

Climate change refers to the deleterious effects in air quality and increase in CO2 content in the atmosphere due to human activities. Fossil-fueled transportation and power generation facilities are the major contributors Continued increase in human-based industrial activities and the expected growth in consumption in China and India has provided immediate impetus to combat the effects of climate change. The link with the  pictures provide, respectively, the role of renewable energy in addressing climate change and an  executive summary from Nicholas Stern's seminal report on the "The Economics of Climate Change". Solving the climate change challenge requires a diversity of approaches: along with more efficient electricity usage, less polluting generation--renewable energy, nuclear power, energy efficiency-- must be part of a portfolio asset mix. However, for the next 10 or 20 years, conventional fossil-fueled plants remain the workhorse for the global electric power industry and managing risk is the biggest challenge: which technologies to use, whether to invest in newer coal plants, fuel price volatility and whether to switch fuel options. Current legislation favors a "cost" for carbon, either in the form of a carbon tax or "cap and trade" scheme which will add on cost. Monitoring and compliance will become part of the power industry currency.

E2K*, a term coined for all the energy programming and monitoring required for global industries, will require much more widespread use of sensors to improve on-line monitoring of critical systems and equipment. These can provide the real-time data for the analytics firepower to assure that carbon reduction objectives are met.
The company provides strategies and analytics back up to minimize risk of operating assets while maintaining low costs, and fleet-wide monitoring options. Renewable energy generators, solar, wind power and biomass-fueled plants, face similar maintenance and operation, some even more important to assure reliable electric power supply. Signatech Systems staff expertise with wireless technologies, advanced sensors and fleet-wide monitoring is critical to manage far-flung assets to make renewable energy plants cost competitive.
